the PIPELINE: Style on Tap

Ditu's New Corset Gets Knitty With It!

ditucorset1.jpg

When launching your first fashion line, it helps to have some high-profile experience under your belt.Layla Abramowitz, FIT graduate and designer behind the new luxury knitwear line Ditu, has honed her chops at Zac Posen and Ports 1961. And, no shock, her technical training lends itself to the intricate knitwear and lingerie forms that compose her new collection. The word "ditu" is both Abramowitz's middle name and the Chinese word for "map." Abramowitz says this word is especially true to her line, too. "I wanted to create a global brand," she says. "And I am a bit of a nomad myself. I find that new, raw experiences act as a catalyst for creative design."

The debut collection was inspired by the stone carvings of the Holy City of Angkor in Cambodia and features handmade tops, sweaters, and dresses all made of muted and textured knits. One standout piece, though, struck our fancy—an unexpected knit corset top that mixes the hard lines of that classic structured garment with the softness of hand-crochet work. From her days at FIT, Abramowitz has developed the technique of knitting fishing line with fabric, which allows for support without rigidity in her garments. With underwear continuing to show up as outerwear on and off the runways, this is a bosom buddy we can all wear while breathing little easier.

imaginary wardrobe makeover: ss08 / daywear

summer is here, which for me (well, us in asia) means unbearable sauna-like conditions, permanently damp hair and a lot of boney girls strutting their 8-inch thighs. i promise to shut up and put up with it all, as long as i get these closet additions...

ditu corset with knit details: corsets aren't just for steamy dressup sessions or nights out on the tiles. well, at least not this beautiful specimen.

Luxury Knitwear Label Ditu Debuts for Spring

Launched by Zac Posen, Ports 1961 Alum Layla Abramowitz

New York, NY, 19 February 2008 – Having gained invaluable design experience working with
the likes of Zac Posen, Ports 1961 and Parisian couturiers, design ingénue Layla Abramowitz has
taken the fashion world into her own hands, launching luxury knitwear label Ditu. Her debut Spring
2008 Collection features hand-crocheted and luxury knit shrugs, skirts, dresses, jackets, sweaters,
and boned bustiers, resulting in an innovative line merging the avant-garde with functional wearability.
The Spring 08 Collection will be available beginning March at New York boutique Cantaloup’s Upper
East Side and Brooklyn locations, as well as directly through www.dituonline.com.

Taking inspiration from Cambodia’s Holy City, Angkor, Ditu’s Spring 08 Collection aims to reflect the
worn beauty of the ancient city and its people, connecting the past and present with the line’s
architectural silhouettes, hand-crocheted embellishments, and remarkable use of texture. The result
is a line of innovative yet elegant knitwear for today’s chic, progressive, modern woman.
A Filipino Jewish American, Ditu founder/designer Layla Abramowitz found that her diverse origins
set a base for creative, unconventional thinking and a destiny for globetrotting. Holding a BFA with
honors in International Fashion Design from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, the
designer has traveled to and received training in France, England, Italy, and China in luxury ready-to-wear,
couture, lingerie and knitwear. Wanting to infuse her collection with these global elements,
Layla decided to aptly name the label “Ditu” after her middle name, translating in Chinese to “map.”
“In a way, it seemed fitting, being that I wanted to create a global brand, and I am a bit of a nomad
myself,” Layla explains. “I find that new, raw experiences act as a catalyst for creative design, and
feel the inspiration drawn from meeting different people and experiencing different cultures should
translate through to the clothing.”

About Ditu
Founded in Fall 2007 by designer Layla Abramowitz, the Ditu brand is inspired by people and
places, moments and causes, hoping to promote awareness for lost parts of the world. Ditu aims to
reinvent conventional perceptions of clothing by creating a balance between experimentation and
wearability, ultimately evoking emotional connections with the wearer.
